JOAN HORNIG S JOURNEY FROM BEING A WALL STREET FINANCIER TO A RENOWNED JEWELRY DESIGNER

Joan Hornig’s success story may be the envy of one and all. She was once a very famous Wall Street financier who later on went into becoming a Jewelry designer. She believed in what interested her and followed her passion for jewelry designing as well.

She states in an interview how she had made a promise to herself while taking her wedding vows that she would follow this passion some day. It was the September 11 attacks that changed her very outlook of life just like with many others. She’d often do beading projects with her younger daughter.

It was only one day when her daughter’s friend’s mother fell for the jewelry big time and asked for where she had got it from. She asked for if she could see some more of it. Next up the lady had brought along a friend. The next thing they knew was all were smitten by Joan’s jewelry and a glorious career in jewelry designing had just begun. Using scale, balance, color and movement, the lady looks at getting an innovative freshness to her designs that continuously win over the hearts of one and all.

Ask her as to which is her favorite piece of jewelry among the ones she has made. Quickly comes the reply that the last one she sold was her most favorite and the one she was about to sell was the new favorite. None the less her fan following isn’t merely restricted to an average American women. She even has big celebrities like Cameron Diaz and Eva Mendes as customers. Joan also deeply believes in charity which is for her a part of her lifestyle. She even tied u with TheKnot.com and came up with the wedding line 'Say I Do to Philanthropy' in July 2010.

BRITS DO LESSER CHARITY WHEN COMPARED WITH AMERICANS

When it comes to charity the brits are lagging far behind the Americans. This does come as a surprise considering the fact that Britain has had a glorious history when it comes to doing charity selflessly. On averagem brits give away about £6 a month in charity. While when it comes to the Americans the amount given to charity per head is £37.

This is also true of rich British citizens who give away much less when compared with the US millionaires. Rich Americans, who earn in the range of £150,000, donate a solid eight times more to charity while comparing this with the British counterparts who don’t give enough.

The counter explanation given by the brits to this is simple that the British population pays about forty percent of their incomes in tax. As far as the Americans are concerned, they give away only about thirty percent of their earnings in income tax.

But then one may not deny the fact that the enthusiasm is somewhere lost as far as doing a selfless and heartfelt charity is concerned. As a saving grace though, when looking at the American billionaires, right from Bill Gates to Rupert Murdoch, Ted Turner to even young Facebook Czar who is all of twenty five, are all going to give away more than half of their earnings in charity.

Mark Zuckerbnerg, the Facebook founder feels people needs to do more rather then wait for another time to do charity. He doesn’t believe in growing older and more stable to be the right time to do charity.

Why not do it now when you can he asks?
57 of America’s richest people have taken the oath that they will give in fifty percent and over of their assets to charity. This also includes director George Lucas and New York mayor Michael Bloomberg among others.

SINGAPORE OPENS ITS HEART OUT WHEN IN MATTERS OF CHARITY

The nation of Singapore, which has among the best economies of the world this year in 2010, donated a massive $1.07 billion. The National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre (NVPC) observed this in its latest study. In fact ever since the NVPC began back in 2004 it has never before borne witness to such massive charity being done by the country.

The same time there has also been this fear of cheating and fraud for there are still a number of people out there more than willing to misappropriate the funds as given by people in charity. In fact, one of the headlines which made it to national news big time was that of a Singapore Red Cross employee. He had misappropriated about ninety thousand dollars worth of charity funds in his own favor and thus cheated. After his cheat was discovered, the man was handed over to the police and suspended.

The law has become stricter when it comes to keeping an eye on any sort of misappropriation of funds. The other big names to have come out with matters of such misappropriation of funds are; The National Kidney Foundation, Ren Ci Hospital and Medicare Centre among others.

But all said and done, this is still not stopping people one bit from readily continuing with their charitable deeds and giving a decent chunk of their monthly earnings to charity. At h same time, many other charity groups and organizations have started to ensure that their working is more transparent and thus people may be able to view things more clearly.

There would thus not be an opportunity for a member to cheat as far as the funds are concerned. The Boys' Brigade Share-A-Gift programme for example also doesn’t only rely on monetary donations but rather also charity being done in the form of food, clothing, household items etc.

PLAN YOUR CHARITY

When it comes to chalking out that perfect financial plan, for a wealthy person even in these economically unstable times, charity still goes a long way. Apart from planning to spend wisely and investing for the future, rich people are also removing some funds aside for charity. In fact on a average a good ten percent of the earnings annually is spent of charity by millionaires.

In fact even looking at from the business point of view one may enjoy immense positives by giving away generous amounts on charity. This is to results in superior ROI in a way. People may end up with better expanded networks, increased sales, positive publicity, promotions, marketing etc

But then charity today may not simply be done just like that. One needs proper planning. Selfless charity goes a long way in the building a better community and economy. It ought to be done strategically and with efficiency. There ought to be volunteers with their charitable programs and fundraisers.

One may as well start of doing charity for something that one’s heart truly feels for. This can be cancer, AIDS, children, disaster victims etc. One may as well go and research about a charity organization and narrow down on the one or two group. A charity group which is doing enough for the welfare for the society should be chosen.

One may then set up his own budget accordingly and steadily increase the monthly amount that he spends on charity. One may start off with $50 monthly and go on to $75 monthly.

Previous Post: PLAN YOUR CHARITY

CHARITY BEGINS FROM HOME

Peter and Susan Tann brought their new house Town Place in Kent. The house was in Throwley near Faversham. They realised that the house they had purchased had large area. In fact it had a ruined barn next door which was full of rotting hay. This is where the couple realized if they clean up the place it might as well be used for a variety of purposes, charity none the less.

The couple selflessly cleaned up the barn. Installed plumbing and electricity and even set up a small stage there. They then invited people to come over and use the place for free, for a fund raiser, party or even parish gathering.

For once, the couple truly knew what happiness meant as gathered with the get-together of a huge group of people. They knew that charity and also hospitality begins from home. Barn dances, harvest lunches and jazz evenings were just some of the gatherings that would take place. There would also evenings comprise of people coming together talking on local history and landscape.

Canterbury Pilgrims Hospice and Demelza House hospice for children are the local charities which also use the place for their fund raising events that has greatly helped them with their charitable causes.

Marking the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar, the Tanns themselves also held a costume dinner which was received with much fan fare and attended by one and all. But now the Tanns are moving to a beach house at Walmer. This is as to the disappointment of one and all.

Similar is the case with Maggee Johnson and her brother Tony Redsell both of whom have been running a children’s theme park, Farming World. They have for the past eighteen years garnered about £63,000 in charity but are now themselves selling of their house. But before they do so, the two plan to have a big supper for charity that would collect about $3000. This charity would be for the breast cancer support.

HOW ABOUT A CHARITY DINNER

The charity girls are deeply into helping the needy with finance. But then the way in which they garner funds is what is impressive. A group of twenty four members comprise of the Charity Girls group. They come from, West Newbury, Haverhill, Andover, Boxford, Bradford, North Reading, Newbury, Newburyport and Ipswich respectively.

It all began with Judi Martino who was on a vacation to the Virgin Islands. She returned back happy and restful and not to mention a tan. She also had something interesting on her mind. She decided of her own unique and fun filled way to help the community Non Profit Organizations.

She got this great idea from and as followed by a friend back living in St. Thomas. The friends Charity Girls of the Virgin Islands comprises of 24 women who meet up for a monthly dinner. This is where each of them pays a sum of fifty dollars. While the hostess in whose house the friends meet donates the dinner. The money then garnered is used for grant making. These Charity Girls would annually give about $14,000 in charity.

Now Martino who was smitten by the idea started a community of her own and called up a group of her own friends. The Essex County Community Foundation was also invited to one of the first meetings to make the charity girls understand as to how effectively they would utilize and manage the funds as gathered. Every month someone of the friends would be a host and the others would be invited for dinner. The host may also invite a local charity of her own choice to the dinner. At the heart of it, this charity is simply modeled after the traditional giving circle.

Charitable Organizations to come under Tighter Inspection

The law makers have decided to keep the charitable trusts asking people for donations under tight supervision. They feel the current laws are not enough to keep a tab on the organizations and a lot of misuse of the funds may be possible.

The officials however state that the current laws are strict enough. Laws like the Inland Revenue Ordinance etc make sure nothing is wrong in the business.

The Liberal Party legislator Miriam Lau Kin-yee stated that the government needs to lay down proper and well framed laws. Currently there are no records and regulations that the government can monitor. It is just going the way it has been since a long time; no new additions and amendments have been introduced. He is quiet concerned about where does all the money actually go. He feels till now a lot of money donated by people for good purposes might have been gone in the wrong hands and the deserving ones have been deprived of its benefits.

Also the donations give tax exemptions, people show huge sum of money as donations and are eligible for heavy tax exemptions which is not a good practice. The government’s tax money is reduced in a big way and thus they need to closely monitor charities.

The government does not wish to inspect the way charitable organizations raise funds. But they will look closely into the matter if an organization as long as long as no more than 10 percent is used to cover administrative costs

Currently the Law Reform Commission is analyzing the framework relating to charities and will soon release a consultation paper this year.
